Buckle up, Benson

by Mark B  - March 10, 2026

This summer is shaping up to be a real challenge for all of us, and it's time we face the facts head-on.

As we head into the hotter months, we're staring down the barrel of rising costs that could hit our wallets hard, from skyrocketing electricity and water bills to higher prices at the grocery store. And while some of these pressures are coming from bigger global events, a lot of it boils down to decisions right here at home that haven't been scrutinized enough.

Let's start with electricity.

SSVEC's new rates went into effect January 1, 2026, the first adjustment since 2016, with an overall revenue increase of about 7.79%. For the average residential member using around 752 kWh/month, that's a jump from $127 to $139 on your bill (up roughly $11–12/month). Oil prices over $100 a barrel, which jacks up fuel costs for everything from power generation to pumping water from our wells. But here's the kicker: our local infrastructure is getting strained even more by unchecked industrial pushes.

Our state representatives have been championing massive "upgrades and improvements" along the I-10 corridor and beyond, all in the name of economic growth. Think about the data centers popping up across Arizona, these things are energy vampires, guzzling power like there's no tomorrow. And right here in Benson, the Aluminum Dynamics Inc. (ADI) plant is adding to the load with its high-energy operations. These aren't just random developments; they're being fast-tracked because our reps are leaning hard on our city council, which seems to be asleep at the wheel, approving permits and variances without demanding real accountability for the long-term costs to us residents.

Now, water, oh boy, this one's personal for all of us in the desert.

Rates and usage are already under pressure, and with summer heat cranking up evaporation and demand, we're in for tighter supplies or higher fees. The ADI plant alone could pull hundreds of thousands of gallons a day once it's fully online, mostly lost to cooling processes that evaporate into thin air. Tie that in with the data centers' massive water needs for cooling servers and the broader infrastructure "improvements" tied to I-10 expansions, all pushed by state-level agendas without enough local pushback.

Our aquifer, already facing questions in ongoing lawsuits and reviews by the Arizona Department of Water Resources, can't handle this without consequences. We've got a 2008 "adequate supply" designation that's being challenged, and if we keep rubber-stamping these projects, we'll see conservation rules, restrictions, or straight-up rate increases to cover the "upgrades" that benefit big industry more than our families. It's all interconnected – higher energy means pricier pumping, and unchecked growth means we're paying the price for someone else's profits.

And don't get me started on food costs.

With fertilizer prices up 20-30% already from global supply disruptions linked to the Middle East tensions, farmers are hurting, and that means higher prices for everything from produce to meat by harvest time. In a rural spot like Benson, where many of us grow our own or rely on local farms, this adds another layer of pain, more expensive inputs for gardens, higher feed for livestock, and tougher budgets all around.

This isn't just bad luck; it's the result of priorities that put big projects and state-driven "growth" ahead of protecting our community. Our city council has been too passive, letting state reps dictate terms on ADI, data centers, and I-2 efforts without fighting for safeguards like rate protections, water conservation mandates, or transparent impact studies. We deserve better – leaders who wake up and put Benson families first, ensuring that any "improvements" don't come at the expense of our daily lives.

That's why the May 19 special recall election is so crucial.

It's our chance to demand accountability and elect council members who will stand up to these pressures, negotiate better deals, and prioritize sustainable management of our resources. No more asleep at the switch, we need action to shield us from these compounding costs.

If you're feeling the squeeze like I am, join me in this fight. Share your stories in the comments, how are these issues hitting your household?
